post care after dog cesarean

After you bitch has a cesarean or even a natural birth the one thing you need to look out for is signs of infection. These can present in many ways, shivering, off food and or water, more than normal bleeding or green or black blood or distarge from the vagina, panting for long periods and being overly tired or lethargic.
showing signs of infection means you need to contact you vet, often a conversation over the phone will let you know whether to be worried or not.
After a cesarean your vet will want to see your girl about 3 days later to check for infection but also to check the uterus is contracting properly. normally the uterus is small sausages sized and during the pregnancy it has expanded, during a cesarean it has been cut into and may not contract properly, when this happens the extra space can fill with fluids and become infected.
After a cesarean, even one like Molly's that went without any problems, there can still be complications afterwards and in the future as well. One complication is the inability to concieve, or to implant a fertilized egg and to become pregnant. This is because the the uterus is damaged in any cesarean, she may also have to have a cesarean again, so these are factors to consider, before breeding from your girl again.

Yesterday Molly had her 3 day visit post cesarean to the vet, all went well, the vet is a little concerned that her uterus is still a little large and wants to see her again tomorrow. A drug may be administered to aid the contraction of the uterus.
